Gelson鈥檚 appeal, published in The Vancouver Sun, eventually led to the Adopt-A-School campaign, which has led to more than $1 million being donated to needy schools http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=6152&hollister-stock-symbol/ - hollister stock symbol in the past two years.
鈥淚t was the honesty behind Carrie鈥檚 words that moved me,鈥?said Shirley, who followed up her initial http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=4559&hollister-dundrum/ - hollister dundrum donation by making her private arts school 鈥?the Arts Connection 鈥?available to Seymour students when it opened last January.
It created a unique situation in http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=6500&hollister-v-necks-for-guys/ - hollister v necks for guys which the community of Richmond, eschewing parochialism, went beyond its boundaries to help a school in a neighbouring city.

Once again, they are paired with students from a Steveston elementary school 鈥?Westwind 鈥?with both groups attending the Arts Connection together. Shirley has an emotional connection to Seymour as her father and his brothers and sisters attended the school. The family owned and operated the Greek Village, Vancouver鈥檚 first Greek restaurant on the corner of Clark and Hastings for many years.
Shirley鈥檚 granddaughter attends Westwind, and it was after seeking her advice that the idea of matching the schools developed, she said.
鈥淥ut of that grew the idea of students reaching out to one another, from a school in Richmond to one http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=2986&applying-at-abercrombie-kids/ - applying at abercrombie kids in the Downtown Eastside,鈥?said Shirley.
Shirley admitted she had some misgivings the first time the students 鈥?each http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=863&abercrombie-careers-mit/ - abercrombie careers mit from such different backgrounds 鈥?met earlier this year. 鈥淚 have to be honest, at that first visit I was very anxious and wondered if it would work. The mingling of students proved so successful that a large number of Westwind students have asked to participate in this fall鈥檚 program, said Shirley.
Larry Hurst, principal of Westwind, said he jumped at the idea of being paired with Seymour.
The orderly neighbourhood surrounding Westwind could hardly be more different than that of Seymour, with its blocks of dilapidated social housing, but Hurst said, when two communities of children come together, any tendency to consider such differences soon vanishes.
鈥淭hey quickly realize the commonalities, the things they share. We鈥檙e just human beings and when they http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=1285&abercrombie-fitch-application/ - abercrombie fitch application laugh and cry together they realize, 鈥榃e鈥檙e all the same, we鈥檙e just kids.鈥?I think this program鈥檚 had a profound effect on them,鈥?he said.
And in May, Westwind and Seymour students, along with parents and teachers, attended a wrap-up lunch at the centre. Richmond Coun. Bill McNulty, who attended, said the city was glad to support the program with a grant.
鈥淚 just wish we could do more,鈥?he said.
And Margaret Stephens of the Community Arts Council of Richmond, who organized the fundraising, said using the arts to help children 鈥渕akes it a natural fit for us.鈥?
鈥淲e do lots of exhibitions during the year but this program http://www.cpaireland.ie/hollisterireland.asp?abercrombiedublinid=5742&hollister-overstock-suppliers/ - hollister overstock suppliers is going to be our prime focus,鈥?she said. 鈥淲e want to carry on bringing in kids from Seymour and we鈥檙e hoping to expand it to include an East Richmond school.鈥?
Stephens said she was encouraged by watching how the two sets of kids interacted. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e done tremendous work here. But watching them exchanging emails, making friendships 鈥?that鈥檚 what鈥檚 important about all this.鈥?
