(Dan Coyro/Sentinel file) 1 WATSONVILLE -- A series of profiles by the American Farmland Trust showcases seven Santa Cruz County farmers among 45 statewide who have introduced innovative conservation practices.
The profiles highlight a range of projects, from water quality and supply to soil conservation and pollinator protection, and are designed to promote beneficial environmental practices statewide.
Edward Thompson Jr., California director for the American Farmland Trust, said the profiled operations are tackling issues critical to the viability of the state's agricultural industry as well as helping make environmental stewardship part of the California brand.
"They are not the only ones doing it, but they are really outstanding examples of farmers taking it upon themselves to do a better job of protecting the environment," Thompson said. "As consumers become more and more aware of the connection between their food and the environment, this will give California farmers and ranchers a competitive advantage."
The goal of the report was to present a diversity of projects, crops and geographical locations, Thompson said. That Santa Cruz County, the state's second smallest county, is the most heavily represented in a report that profiles farms in 25 counties was due in part to an editorial lapse, he said.
"But give credit where credit is due," Thompson said. "Growers in http://www.selecteam.ch/longchamp.asp?id=8&amazon-longchamp-taschen-neu/ - amazon longchamp taschen neu Santa Cruz County are probably among the leaders in an environmental ethic."
Included in the county profiles are large farms and small, conventional http://www.laufen-in-balve.de/old/index.asp?id=9/ - anschrift hollister ludwigshafen and organic growers and diverse crops.
Raspberry grower John Eiskamp, a past president of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, was singled out for a technology-based irrigation system that has reduced water use and fertilizer runoff. He participates in Community Water Dialogue, a group of farmers, landowners and community members working to solve chronic groundwater overdraft in the Pajaro http://www.terete.es/hollister-es.asp?id=385/ - hollister españa Valley. He said it was flattering to be included in the report.
"It's just a small thing, but together we all contribute and it adds up," he said.
Others singled out include Swanton Berry Farm, Live Earth Farm, Reiter Berry Farms, Ponce Produce, High Ground Organics and Suncrest Nursery.
Jacob's Farm, based in Pescadero, was a San Mateo County entry, but operates in the Pajaro Valley as well.
"Water quality, water supply, wildlife habitat, pollinator habitat, beneficial insects -- there are some really strong examples of leadership across all of those areas," said Lisa Lurie, conservation program specialist at the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County.
The district helped the trust identify local examples of stewardship, and Lurie wasn't surprised to see the county so well represented in the final report. In a community that values its agricultural and natural resources, there was no shortage of candidates, she said.
