Research In Motion has been selected by Canada based EnStream -- a jointventure of Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless and TELUS -- to provide its SecureElement Manager (SEM) solution to manage credentials on wireless handsets inCanada that support NFC services.Through the infrastructure that RIM's SEM solution provides, financialinstitutions in Canada will have a single gateway allowing them to support anycustomer with an NFC-enabled smartphone that wants to enable a "mobilewallet" application. RIM's SEM solution provides the infrastructure thatwill securely manage information credentials for NFC payments, which can be usedby any financial institution, carrier, or smartphone."We selected RIM for their long-standing relationships with mobileoperators and financial institutions, and their track record of operating asecure network for connected services," said Almis Ledas, Chief OperatingOfficer of EnStream. "By adopting the secure GSMA Global Platform standardand using SEM infrastructure hosted and operated by RIM, consumers and financialinstitutions can have full confidence in financial credentials enabled throughEnStream."

New Zealand's Commerce Commission has declared that it considers Telecom NewZealand to have overstated the value of its fixed access network by over abillion dollars (US$800 million).As a result of its analysis, the Commission concludes that the regulatoryfinancial statements are unreliable for regulatory purposes.Telecom is required to publish financial statements and other informationabout its network, wholesale and retail business activities and services in aform determined by the Commission. These statements should provide usefulinformation to the telecommunications industry about the operation and behaviourof Telecom.Telecom said the commission's comments did not relate to the company'sstatutory accounts, and had no impact on Telecom's financial reporting, anyregulated pricing or guidance.The Commission considers that Telecom's valuation of key assets isoverstated, and in particular, that Telecom's access network is overvalued byover a billion dollars. This overestimation has a flow on effect throughout theregulatory financial statements and undermines the reliability of theinformation."In valuing its assets, Telecom is required to use processes which areobjectively justifiable and reasonable," said Dr Ross Patterson,Telecommunications Commissioner. "However, Telecom has not satisfied theCommission that its 2009/10 trenching discount factors are objectivelyjustifiable and, in particular, that they reflect economies of scale. As aconsequence, a number of costs, including the cost of providing rural phonelines - for which Telecom has reported a loss - are likely to be substantiallyoverstated."The Commission proposes to consult on a range of changes to the requirementsfor 2010/11 and on whether Telecom should be required to re-publish its 2009/10regulatory financial statements to address this overestimation issue.
